Cellular communication systems have gone through a few generations of development. The latest technology migration was from 2.5G to 3G networks, enabling info-entertainment and other multimedia applications. Beyond 3G, new standards such as high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) and cdma2000 1x EV DV standards have been ratified. These 3G+ standards are based on the principal of a shared channel where users are dynamically assigned codes on packet-by-packet bases. This approach to radio resource sharing is optimal for data services that tend to have bursts of data. The 3G+ standards, therefore, lower the cost of delivering data services for the operators. Also, 3G+ standards employ fast rescheduling algorithms that reduce the variance in downlink transmission delay. This enhances the experience with delay-sensitive applications such as interactive games. Beyond 3G+, work has already begun on fourth-generation (4G) technology, with the goal of achieving data rates up to 100 Mbps.
